Home Ventilation

Heat recovery and extract ventilation systems that control condensation, reduce moisture and keep your Wellington home healthy.

The three types of moisture

  • Condensation — probably the most common form of moisture affecting your home. Effects include streaming windows and walls, deterioration in decoration such as discolouring of window panes, and eventually the growth of black mould.
  • Rising moisture — water enters a structure through a permeable masonry wall in an upward movement by capillary action. Effects include decayed skirting boards, crumbling plaster, peeling paint and wallpaper.
  • Penetrating moisture — water soaks through into the perimeter wall, floors and ceilings, often from defective guttering, cracked rendering or faulty joints between windows and walls. Common effects include damp patches on floors, ceilings or walls, damage to decoration, decay to timber and plaster, and mould growth.

Extractor fans and rangehoods

Huge amounts of moisture are generated in kitchens and bathrooms. This is where rangehoods and extractor fans should be placed — as close to the moisture source as possible — and they must be vented to the outside, not the roof space.

Ventilation systems explained

  • HRV stands for 'heat recovery ventilation'. It provides good climate control economically and is mainly used for ventilation. No heating is added, so it won't warm your home beyond what can be recovered by the heat exchanger. These systems are considered one of the best options for Kiwi homes.
  • ERV stands for 'energy recovery ventilation'. It works the same as an HRV system but transfers both temperature and moisture, using its heat exchanger to pre-warm the cold air coming in. These systems are ideal for highly humid areas rather than typical New Zealand conditions.
  • HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Designing an HVAC system takes mechanical engineering expertise and a grasp of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. These systems are ideal for offices or large industrial spaces.
